Micellar water works thanks to micelles, structures formed by surfactants.
Each micelle has a part that attracts water and a part that attracts oils, makeup, and impurities. When it passes over the skin, the micelle encapsulates the dirt and lifts it from the skin's surface.
The key point is this: micelles do not "disappear" from the skin on their own.
If they are not removed, they can remain on the skin surface along with the residues they have captured. For this reason, it is generally advisable not to leave surfactant-based cleansing products on the skin for long.
It is not an aggressive product, but it is still a cleansing system. Over time, especially in individuals with sensitive skin or an impaired skin barrier, unremoved residues can contribute to:
• temporary alteration of the hydrolipidic film
• increased skin sensitivity
• possible interference with the tolerability of subsequent treatments
How to apply it correctly
Micellar water should be used with absolute delicacy.
It is applied on a soft, well-soaked cotton pad, without ever scrubbing.
The correct motion is to place it and drag it lightly, not to rub.
• Place the pad on the skin for a few seconds
• Let the micelles "hook" onto makeup and impurities
• Remove with a slow and gentle movement
On the eyes:
the pad should be placed, left to act, and then lifted, avoiding rubbing.
Repeated rubbing, especially with poorly soaked pads or energetic movements, can:
• promote micro-irritations
• stress the periocular skin barrier
• accentuate redness and sensitivity
After application
Ideally, in a dermatological context, it is recommended to remove micellar water:
• with a light rinse with water
or
• with a subsequent gentle cleanse, especially if more resistant makeup or waterproof makeup has been removed
This step helps to eliminate:
• any surfactant residues
• micelles that have bound impurities and sebum
• possible makeup residues not completely removed
In summary
Choose formulas designed to be well tolerated even without immediate rinsing. In daily life, we well understand the need for a quick and practical routine, especially when away from home and you want to avoid makeup getting on the towel or have little time for a complete cleanse.
Micellar water is a useful solution in these cases, but it is important to use it with awareness: pay attention to the formulation and try to adopt good cleansing habits in the long run.
